Beginning Chemistry Lab

What to Expect

Beginning Chemistry Lab is a hands-on, year-long laboratory course where students explore chemistry through experiments, investigations, and real-world problem solving. Students don't just learn chemistry—they think, observe, and investigate like chemists.

❋ Intentional Structure

Each class begins with a real-world question or scientific mystery. Students work together to conduct laboratory investigations, analyze evidence, discuss their discoveries, and record their findings in their personal Chemist's Field Journal. Through hands-on experiences, students build both scientific knowledge and confidence in the laboratory.

Designed for students in grades 7–12, this course welcomes both middle and high school students who are ready for a deeper science experience. Instruction is differentiated to meet students where they are while challenging each learner to grow.

❋ Collaborative Energy

New students are welcome to join the class throughout the school year. Students enrolling after the course has begun complete a Chemist Orientation to build foundational lab skills before joining ongoing investigations.

❋ New Students

Beginning Chemistry Lab is taught by Erika Comfort; a credentialed high school chemistry teacher who brings both subject expertise and a passion for hands-on learning. Through small class sizes, guided investigations, and meaningful discussions, students receive the support and encouragement needed to build confidence while exploring the fascinating world of chemistry.

❋ Expert Facilitation

Students will use CK-12 Basic Chemistry as the course text, providing a strong foundation in chemistry concepts while allowing our class time to focus on discussion, laboratory investigations, and hands-on learning.

❋ Curriculum

To get the most from each laboratory experience, students complete a small amount of preparation at home each week, including assigned reading, guided notes, vocabulary, and occasional practice questions. Most weeks, this preparation is designed to take approximately 30–45 minutes.

❋ Homework
Discover the Science Behind Everyday Life.

Schedule

Students prepare for each lab with brief reading and guided notes using the free CK-12 Basic Chemistry text. Every Monday, they investigate real-world chemistry through hands-on experiments, collaborative problem-solving, and meaningful scientific discussion.
